The percentage of youth experiencing homelessness who identify as LGBT is 40%.  Who identify as LGBT - no Q, i, or a - simply the ones who who volunteered that yes, they are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.  It's usually not cool to be an out and proud queer person - you already are at risk, and one more reason to be singled out isn't helpful.  So some people think that even the incredibly high estimate of 40% is actually too low.  The percentage of LGBT youth in the general population is hard to say, perhaps 5-15%.  Whether you lean towards 5% or 15%, 40% is not only obscene, it is a call to care, and if you have a heart for it, a call for action.

The number of youth experiencing homelessness each year in the United States is estimated at 1.5 - 1.7 MILLION.
